Brock Akil has become an essential voice for millennial black women, exploring issues of friendship, womanhood and the workplace in her scripts. The creator topped that trifecta with OWN’s “Love Is__,” an unprecedented tale of a black power couple (based loosely on her relationship with director husband Salim Akil) that weaves in African-American social mores. She and Akil launched The CW’s “Black Lightning” under the pair’s three-year deal with Warner Bros. Television. The superhero drama broke from traditional tropes by foregoing an origins story, instead focusing on character development amid the backdrop of current cultural issues Meanwhile, after four seasons, her flagship BET series “Being Mary Jane” said its goodbyes with a two-hour film in September 2018.
