Lili
Hinstin

Artistic Director

A former chief of France’s Entrevues Belfort international film fest and former producer with Les Films du Saut du Tigre, which she set up in 2001, Hinstin stepped in at Locarno in 2018, taking the reins from Italy’s Carlo Chatrian (who moved to the Berlinale) and becoming the second female artistic director of the venerable Swiss event since its 1946 founding. For her debut edition this year, roughly 40 percent of the features were by female filmmakers — without resorting to quotas, she proudly pointed out. To further broaden the perspective of the festival, Hinstin accepted the offer of the Blake Edwards estate to postpone his retrospective this year and instead moved up one on black film that had been slated for 2020, which she titled Black Light.
