Vernoff, who was “Grey’s Anatomy” head writer for the medical drama’s explosive first seven seasons, returned for Season 14 in 2017 to be its showrunner, having been anointed by creator Shonda Rhimes. Last season, its 17th, “Grey’s” was television’s No. 1 entertainment show in the 18-49 demographic among the networks that report ratings. During the pandemic, Vernoff safely ran “Grey’s” and the fourth season of its spinoff, “Station 19,” and will continue to be in charge of both shows — ABC’s No. 1 and No. 2 scripted series, respectively. The series have not only contended with COVID-19 behind the scenes, but reflected the reality of the stories of frontline workers among doctors and firefighters. In spring 2021, Vernoff’s prodco Trip the Light re-upped with ABC Signature for a multi-year overall deal.
