Not seeing eye to eye with Mark Zuckerberg might seem foolhardy, but Systrom has the kind of track record that justifies his shocking move to depart the company he founded. Instagram hit a billion monthly active users in 2018 as Systrom rolled out a series of new features, including an anti-bullying filter and IGTV, a standalone app for long-form vertical video. He continued to beat Snapchat at its own game, scoring more than double the number of daily active users (400 million). Since its 2010 launch, the company has also expanded internally, amassing more than 1,000 employees worldwide. That’s a long way from the 13 employees it had when Facebook bought it in 2012. As for what’s next, Systrom said in October, “I have a few more Instagrams,
time-wise, in me.”
