Mayer has long enjoyed a reputation as a fierce competitor in the media industry, but his biggest test may be yet to come. After a Disney reorganization earlier this year, he has moved from chief strategy officer to head up the company’s international and direct-to-consumer businesses, which include the OTT subscription operation ESPN+ and a still unnamed Disney streaming service that is designed to go head to head with the likes of Netflix, Amazon and YouTube and host releases from Pixar, Disney and Marvel, as well as the newly acquired Fox catalog and some surprises. As consumers increasingly gravitate to SVOD, the efforts of Mayer’s unit will be pivotal. He also now oversees a streamlining of the company’s ad sales and ad technology efforts.
