My So-Called Company

Writer / Producer

With The CW’s “The Vampire Diaries” and its spinoff, “The Originals,” officially in the TV books after eight and five seasons, respectively, Plec is prepping the next extension of her bloodsucker universe – “Legacies.” Based on the novel by L.J. Smith and developed by Plec and Kevin Williamson, the “Vampire Diaries” franchise firmly established the longtime showrunner as a valuable commodity for Warner Bros. Television, where she is in an overall deal. She directed the pilot for “Roswell, New Mexico,” the eagerly awaited reboot of the teen favorite, on The CW. Quite comfortable in the darkness, Plec got her start as a producer on Wes Craven horror films — “Scream 2,” “Teaching Mrs. Tingle” — before moving to TV on ABC Family’s “Kyle XY.”

Although apart, most of the Mikaelsons were at peace — and finally able to focus on...

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given in your career?

“If you don't know the answer to a question, rather than guessing, posturing, lying or flailing, just respond "Let me get back to you on that," and then hang up the phone and call someone smarter than you. We don't need to know everything, and we need to be able to trust others to help us get our job done. If we try to do it all alone, we will fail.”

What or who inspires you?

“Honest, uncynical storytelling. A well-composed wide master shot. Netflix original series. Aaron Sorkin's tempo. Activists who do, rather than those of us who just tweet. Viewers who know they need to turn off smooth-motion on their televisions. People who love their job.”
