The year 2018 could have been iffy for Atlantic Records: Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars and Coldplay were off cycle, and the newest release from Twenty One Pilots wasn’t due out until October. So, what happened? Client Cardi B, that’s what, as she became a superstar mere months after the release of her smash 2017 single “Bodak Yellow.” And the songwriting rapper is just the latest in a string of blockbusters from the regime of Greenwald and Craig Kallman, who have helmed the company since 2005. Atlantic also relaunched Elektra as a stand-alone label, the first such move the industry has seen in more than 15 years.
