It’s tough to trace a throughline from “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” to “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” and on to “Crazy Rich Asians,” but director-producer Chu brought to the first two a distinct, kinetic visual style that made the perfect segue to the frenetic world of over-the-top wealth in the latter, a buzzy rom-com that wowed at the box office as the first studio movie in a quarter century with an all-Asian cast. The sequel was a lock before the lines had even cleared. In the wings are “In The Heights,” the long-gestating adaptation of the breakout musical by “Hamilton” phenomenon Lin-Manuel Miranda, and round three of heist actioner “Now You See Me.” Riding the wave, he’s also tackling TV for Apple with a series about a real-life 11-year-old investigative reporter.
