Film Director

The success of “Crazy Rich Asians” not only put director Chu’s career into overdrive, it proved the commercial viability of Asian-themed films, as it grossed $238.5 million worldwide. The son of a Los Altos, Ca., restaurateur won armfuls of awards at USC’s film school, then segued into features, demonstrating an affinity for musicals (2008’s “Step Up 2,” 2010’s “Step Up 3D” and a pair of Justin Bieber concert films) and action (2013’s “G.I. Joe: Retaliation”). On tap for Chu, who recently signed a four-year overall deal with Disney’s 20th Television, are a Netflix series about the 2018 Thai cave rescue and an adaptation of the Quiara Alegría Hudes/Lin-Manuel Miranda Broadway musical “In the Heights,” the latter set for release by Warner Bros. in June 2020.
