Oliver returned for a ninth season of his HBO show in 2022, tackling issues such as wrongful convictions, environmental racism, electric utilities, school shootings, Big Tech monopolies, inflation and even the impact of the “Law & Order” franchise on the American criminal-justice system. And then there was the Emmy Awards, where the show continued to shine, winning three out of its five 2022 nominations — and making it to 17 overall —including writing for a variety series and outstanding variety talk series. But it’s never a dull year for the funnyman, who even found himself having to snarkily defend his seventh consecutive Emmy win while being queried by a reporter backstage. Oliver’s headlines this year included him making some fun tweaks at his new Warner Bros. Discovery bosses and taking on U.K. TV network Sky for censoring his jokes about Queen Elizabeth II after her passing.
