Jessica
Rosenworcel
Chair
After serving as one of the FCC’s five commissioners for most of the preceding nine years, Rosenworcel was appointed its acting chair by newly inaugurated President Joe Biden in January 2021. Upon her Senate confirmation that December, she became the first female named permanent chair of the independent governmental agency. She is known as a strong proponent of net neutrality rules — meaning preventing internet service providers from blocking, slowing or charging added fees for certain sites or content — which were repealed under her predecessor Ajit Pai in 2018. But challenges to confirm Gigi Sohn’s nomination to fill the vacant FCC commissioners’ seat (which would give Democrats a 3-2 advantage) — opposed by the DGA for her past stances on copyright law — prevented Rosenworcel from taking action on net neutrality.
