Anyone who thinks there are no second acts should meet Smart, who had a hit TV series (“Designing Women”) and three Emmys long before her serious renaissance of recent years. She earned three additional nominations during the pandemic, first in 2020 for HBO’s limited “Watchmen” series and in 2021 for HBO’s “Mare of Easttown” and HBO Max’s “Hacks,” the latter of which she won with a standing ovation. All three of those acclaimed roles featured her as a cagey woman of a certain age with a sharp tongue, but Smart’s acumen feels as fresh as ever, propelling “Hacks” to a second-season renewal as she currently films for silent-film era feature “Babylon,” due in 2022 from Paramount and director Damien Chazelle.
