Canning was back in the awards-season spotlight in 2022 with Netflix’s “The Power of the Dog,” about a cruel and domineering rancher (Benedict Cumberbatch) in 1920s Montana who becomes enamored with his brother’s stepson. The film grabbed 12 Academy Awards nominations, winning one for Jane Campion as best director. Ten years earlier, the native Brit won an Oscar for best picture for producing “The King’s Speech,” about the efforts of newly minted monarch King George VI (Colin Firth) to overcome his stutter. Between red carpet appearances, Canning found time to complete a wealth of projects this year, including TV series “Heartstopper” (Netflix), “The Essex Serpent” and “Slow Horses” (both for Apple TV+) and features “The Stranger,” with Joel Edgerton, Julia Garner starrer “The Royal Hotel” and “The Son,” starring Hugh Grant, Laura Dern and Anthony Hopkins.
