Hwang has enjoyed success as a writer-director in his native South Korea for more than a decade, with films such as the crime drama “Silenced” (2011), the comedy “The Granny” (2014) and the 17th-century war drama “The Fortress” (2017). But outside of critics and
Asian cinema aficionados, he was not well known to American audiences. That all changed with his Netflix series “Squid Game,” a darkly comedic, dystopian tale of 456 debt-addled people competing in deadly children’s games for the chance to win $35 million. Released worldwide in September 2021 to widespread critical acclaim, the show became a Netflix megahit, racking up 1.65 billion viewing hours in its first four weeks on the platform. It also inspired a popular Halloween costume trend that had people dressing up as everything from its track suit-clad contestants to its giant animatronic killer doll Young-hee.
