Hulst joined SIE from Guerrilla Games, where he oversaw 2017’s “Horizon Zero Dawn,” a PlayStation 4 bestseller. Now, he is laser focused on maintaining a steady pipeline of exclusives for the new PS5. So far, so good, as April 2021 saw “MLB The Show 21” from San Diego Studio become the fastest-selling entry in that franchise, while new IP “Returnal” from Housemarque, acquired by SIE later in 2021, achieved critical acclaim with modest sales. “Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart,” also from Insomniac and released in June, has already surpassed a million units as well. Hulst has expanded PlayStation Studios further in 2021, acquiring Bluepoint Games, known for PS5’s “Demon’s Souls” remaster, and Firesprite, which worked on “The Playroom” for PS4 and PSVR.
