Gowrappan

EVP / Group CEO

After Verizon’s AOL and Yahoo acquisitions didn’t pay off as expected, the telco tapped Gowrappan to turn around the content, advertising and technology group whose brands include Yahoo, TechCrunch, HuffPost and immersive-media company RYOT. Gowrappan, who’s spent 15-plus years as a senior Internet exec, joined Verizon in April 2018 as COO and was bumped up to CEO six months later. After renaming the group Verizon Media, he oversaw a round of layoffs and sold blogging site Tumblr in efforts to get the business on track. He was previously global managing director at Alibaba Group, where he focused on international expansion of the Chinese conglomerate. His Internet cred formed during his time as a top exec at mobile-search startup Quixey, games company Zynga and, coincidentally, Yahoo.
