Cardinale made headlines in August 2020 when his private investment firm, RedBird Capital Partners, entered into a 50/50 deal with Dwayne Johnson and his business partner Dany Garcia to acquire the XFL, making Garcia the first female owner of a sports league. The same month, he teamed with Oakland A’s exec Billy Beane, former Cleveland Browns president Alex Scheiner and Sacramento Kings VP of strategy and analytics Luke Bornn to raise $575 million with an initial public offering for RedBall Acquisition Corporation, which plans to acquire a professional sports franchise or sports-related business.
