After holding various posts at Viacom for 15 years before joining NBCUniversal in 2012, Cheeks returned to ViacomCBS earlier in 2020 after the departure of former chairman and CEO Joe Ianniello. He now oversees all of the company’s CBS assets, including its broadcast network, CBS Sports and CBS News, and he’ll partner with ViacomCBS’ digital team on all CBS-branded digital assets, including CBS All Access. He has set a goal of 40% BIPOC representation in writers’ rooms by the start of the 2021-22 television season, and he’ll dedicate at least 25% of CBS’ development budget to projects from BIPOC creators. He also engaged an advisory firm to examine police reform and advise on CBS’ legal dramas in light of societal changes.
