German mini-major Leonine, bankrolled by private-equity outfit KKR, was formed in 2019 from the merger of film and TV producer-distributor Tele München Group, movie distributor Universum Film, TV producer i&u TV and producer Wiedemann & Berg Film. Before long it acquired “Dark” producer W&B Television. Kogel has quickly become one of Germany’s most voracious buyers of big-budget movies, such as Roland Emmerich’s sci-fi epic “Moonfall,” Russell Crowe horror-thriller “Unhinged” and the Jason Statham-Guy Ritchie spy thriller “Five Eyes,” with the goal of releasing 15-20 movies theatrically a year. In June, Leonine joined pan-European media group Mediawan Alliance. Although hit by the COVID-19 shutdown of movie theaters, the company has a massive rights library that allowed it to benefit from increased demand for streaming content.
