Best known as an Oscar-winning actor (“The Last King of Scotland”), Whitaker has long been active as a director (“Waiting to Exhale,” “Hope Floats”) and, increasingly, a producer of content focusing on BIPOC experiences, including the new big-screen adaptation of Nella Larson’s novel “Passing,” the Harlem music docuseries “By Whatever Means Necessary” and “The Peace Pioneer,” an upcoming doc exploring tribal conflict in South Sudan. He is also developing a Latinx drama series starring Eva Longoria for ABC, as well as projects for Amazon as part of the first-look deal his Significant Productions (cofounded with Nina Yang Bongiovi) inked in 2019. He remains busy as actor, too, with roles in the Netflix feature “Jingle Jangle” and the Epix crime-boss series “Godfather of Harlem,” which he also exec produces.
