Some admire Musk for his ambition and boldness in building Tesla and SpaceX. But he’s also seen as a dilettante who lives in a social media bubble and has little regard for how his impetuous actions affect others. The tumult that he brought to Twitter after finalizing his $44 billion acquisition in late October has been stunning to watch as it hemorrhages ad revenue amid excessive layoffs and resignations. Musk’s anything-goes attitude about content on the platform quickly butted heads with real-world realities and many blue-chip marketers have put a pause on Twitter spending because of his behavior, from retweeting conspiracy theories to attacking public figures, making Twitter’s rehabilitation that much more difficult. Musk has already stated his desire to find a new CEO for the platform as his antics continue to spook investors away from Tesla, the stock of which is down 44% in December amid production shortfalls and decreasing sales.
