VP, Tencent / CEO, Tencent Pictures

Cheng’s name is unknown to most industry watchers, but one can rest assured any calls he makes to studio chiefs around the world are returned posthaste. Sitting atop Tencent Pictures, he has poured hundreds of millions into Hollywood, co-financing tentpole features including “Warcraft,” “Kong: Skull Island,” “Venom,” “Bumblebee,” “Men in Black: International,” “Terminator: Dark Fate” and 2021’s “Top Gun: Maverick,” all of which credit him as executive producer. He’s also a VP of his parent company, the Chinese tech behemoth Tencent Holdings, which has a market cap close to $700 billion. Tencent has also financed many Chinese-language films, such as the historical war drama “The Eight Hundred,” which overtook “Bad Boys for Life” in September as the world’s top-grossing film of 2020.
