Smith’s Sinclair has been in the headlines in recent years mostly for its attempted, then terminated, $3.9 billion merger with Tribune Media Company. But more recently, the company launched the ad-supported free streaming service STIRR, which aggregates news, sports, lifestyle and local reports from the broadcast giant’s markets. The company acquired 21 Fox-branded regional sports networks from Disney after the media conglomerate acquired 21st Century Fox’s entertainment assets. In early 2021, the broadcaster is set to premiere a headline-driven 6-9 a.m. news show on more than a third of its 190 stations in a bid to find new areas in which to generate profit — particularly in the time of ubiquitous streaming platforms threatening to eat at viewer share.
