The term “metaverse” is as controversial as it is a calling card for tech businesses to create the next new interactive digital experience, but Baszucki’s Roblox remains one of its clearest examples. Both a game and a creation platform where players design their own experiences, Roblox is massively popular, drawing in just under 58 million daily active users (DAUs) in September, a 23% year-over-over increase that negated Q2, which saw the first quarterly decrease in subscribers after years of exceptional growth. However, Q2 also brought the most quarterly revenue yet for Roblox, which continues to partner with big brands for in-game events and locales, including interactive music experience Spotify Island, virtual concerts and listening parties for new releases, as well as promotional events for films such as “Black Adam” and sports leagues FIFA and the NFL.
