When “The Handmaid’s Tale” won the Emmy for best drama last year, it surprised prognosticators. It was also a coronation for Hulu as a major source of original programming and a validation for Erwich, who gambled that a smart adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s science-fiction classic would resonate with contemporary viewers. Since then, the streaming service has continued to go big with original content under Erwich, with such new series as “Marvel’s Runaways” and “Castle Rock,” its second Stephen King outing after the miniseries “11.22.63.” Much about Hulu’s future after the Disney-Fox merger remains unclear, but Erwich will have broad responsibilities in shaping its content offerings — a clear sign that no matter what lies ahead, he’ll be part of it.
