When Chance the Rapper placed fifth on the 2017 Forbes “Highest-Paid Hip-Hop Artists” list with an estimated $33 million, it raised eyebrows because he was all of 24 years old but also because he’d never sold an album. And yet his most recent, 2016’s “Coloring Book,” spawned three Grammys, and his songs are clocking billions of plays. He posts his recorded music for free, which means his impressive haul is entirely from touring, streaming (boosted by a neat half-million-dollar deal with Apple Music for “Coloring Book”) and partnering with the likes of Nike, Nestle, New Era and Twitter. In association with mana-ger Pat Corcoran, he’s taken many of his businesses in house and is now flush enough to donate $1 million to the public schools of his beloved Chicago.
