Fukunaga established his directing bona fides with a string of acclaimed projects, from the South American immigrant drama “Sin Nombre” (2009) to the entire first season of HBO’s “True Detective.” But nothing could have prepared him for the trials he faced helming “No Time to Die,” the 25th installment in the James Bond franchise and star Daniel Craig’s last film as the MI6 agent. A challenging task under the best of circumstances, it was complicated by an ankle injury to Craig that delayed production, an explosion damaging Pinewood’s 007 stage and a raft of rewrites involving everyone from Fukunaga to Phoebe Waller-Bridge (“Fleabag”). Then as he was completing the post-production homestretch for the mega-film’s planned April 2020 opening, its release was delayed twice because of the global pandemic and is now set to release in April 2021.
