Dubai-based Vox, a subsidiary of leading regional mall and hotel developer Majid Al Futtaim and the largest cinema exhibitor in the Middle East, is ahead of competitors such as AMC Cinemas in screening up Saudi Arabia as it liberalizes its entertainment environment. After being granted the first Saudi license in April 2018 following the removal of a 35-year government ban on showing films, Vox now has 110 screens set to be operational in the region by year’s end, and in May the company partnered with Imax to introduce the technology at several Saudi facilities. If it succeeds in investing more than $500 million for 600 screens over the next five years, PwC projects the oil-rich kingdom will be a top-10 movie market within a decade.
