Federal Communications Commission

Pai ushered in a deregulation agenda at the Federal Communications Commission that has been pleasing to broadcasters and Internet providers, after years in which industry argued that government oversight was onerous and outdated. No other action has been more controversial than his decision to repeal most of the agency’s net-neutrality rules, triggering a backlash and leading to court challenges and states passing their own regulations. He was appointed to the post by Donald Trump, but he has tried to steer clear of the president’s attacks on the media and threats to revoke broadcast licenses. News outlets may be alarmed at the rhetoric coming from the White House, but their station owners are pleased with Pai’s moves to lift media ownership rules.
