As Instagram experienced a huge increase in activism and protest in the wake of nationwide Black Lives Matters demonstrations, Mosseri doubled down on addressing potential bias on the platform, reevaluating harassment, distribution and account verification policies, while also analyzing algorithms for unintentional biases. With the pandemic keeping customers at home, spurring a 70% month-over-month increase in Instagram Live usage, the company also made it easier for creators to monetize their content and businesses to promote gift cards, online food orders and fundraisers. Before moving to Instagram, Mosseri oversaw Facebook’s newsfeed and designed its mobile apps. Now, he’s building support for its short video feature Reels (Instagram’s answer to TikTok), which launched globally in 2020.
