The stop-motion animated special “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Raindeer” made its debut on NBC on Sunday, Dec. 6, 1964, and became an annual Christmas staple, celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2014. The special starred gravelly-voiced Burl Ives as a jolly snowman who told the tale of a bunch of misfits, including a proboscisally-challenged reindeer, an elf who really wants to be a dentist and a whole island of unwanted toys waiting to find a home.
