This Week in Entertainment 1990

Show business lost not one but two luminaries on May 16, 1990. Singer-actor and Rat Pack member Sammy Davis Jr. died of complications due to throat cancer. He was 64. He started his career in vaudeville then, after serving in the Army in World War II, he returned to singing and got into movies via his friend Frank Sinatra, whose Rat Pack also included Dean Martin, Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford. Films included the original “Oceans 11” and “Robin and the 7 Hoods.” Muppets creator Jim Henson also died on May 16, 1990. Unlike Davis, Henson’s death was unexpected. In early May, he was experiencing flu-like symptoms when he appeared with his famous Kermit the Frog puppet on “The Arsenio Hall Show,” but resisted going to the hospital. By the time he finally went to the hospital more than two weeks later, he was having trouble breathing and eventually had to be placed on a ventilator. His death was attributed to streptococcal toxic shock syndrome, which caused multiple organ failure. He was 53.
