Brian Jones, one of the founding members of the Rolling Stones, drowned in a swimming pool on July 3, 1969, one month after being asked to leave the band. He was 27 at the time of his death. Jones was a talented musician who played many instruments including guitar, sitar, dulcimer and keyboards among others. Though he started out as the band’s leader and frequently acted as manager, he was ultimately overshadowed by frontman Mick Jagger and lead guitarist Keith Richards, who did the bulk of the songwriting. He was replaced by Mick Taylor. Jones’ death was ruled an accident.
