Richard M. Nixon addressed the nation on live television and radio on the evening of Aug. 8, 1974, resigning as president of the United States, the only president ever to do so. His resignation was the result of the ongoing revelations about the Watergate scandal, about halfway through his second term. Vice President Gerald Ford was sworn in as president the next day and proceeded to pardon his predecessor the following month.
