Super Bowl XXXVIII pitted the Carolina Panthers of the NFC against the New England Patriots of the AFC, but the game became notorious for its half-time show and Janet Jackson’s notorious wardrobe malfunction, which exposed the singer’s breast, adorned with a nipple shield, for about a half-second of airtime on live TV. Jackson maintained that the exposure was an accident, but CBS was find a record $550,000, which was appealed and ultimately voided.
