This Week in Entertainment 1977

Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski was charged in the rape of a 13-year-old girl on March 11, 1977. He was 43 at the time. At his arraignment, Polanski pleaded not guilty to all five charges against him, but later accepted a plea deal that dropped the initial five charges in exchange for him pleading guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse, a lesser charge, with a recommendation of probation. But just hours before he was to be sentenced in February 1978, Polanski fled to France because he found out he would likely face some prison time and be deported. Polanski has stayed out of the United States since by staying in countries that wouldn’t extradite him. Polanski was arrested in 2009 in Zurich, Switzerland, but was released in 2010 after a Swiss court rejected the extradition request. All the original charges against him in the U.S. are still pending against him.
