The Week in Entertainment 1966

The Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Telethon was first presented by the legendary comedian the weekend of Sept. 4-5, 1966. Lewis hosted the event on Labor Day weekend every year until 2010, and through 2009, it raised more than $2 billion for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. Lewis held telethons to support muscular dystrophy research prior to 1966, but the event was rebranded that year with Lewis’ name and cachet. Lewis would host guests talk-show style for the duration of the event and took few breaks. And he would famously point to a tote board showing the amount of money raised. Initially, it was not expected to be much of a success, but it would go on to raise millions each year it was held. Lewis, who died Aug. 20, 2017, was spending less time on-air for the telethon as he got older and parted ways with it before the 2011 edition.
