Osama bin Laden, the leader of terrorist group al-Qaida, was killed on May 2, 2011, in his Pakistan hideout by U.S. Navy SEALs in an operation dubbed Operation Neptune Spear. The U.S. had been hunting bin Laden even before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on American soil. Networks offered continuous coverage as news leaked of bin Laden’s death. It also had an impact on a major motion picture being written about the hunt for the al-Qaida leader.
