Though Ellen DeGeneres came out as gay earlier in the year on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” her character on her popular ABC sitcom “Ellen” waited until April 30, 1997, to realize she was a lesbian and to come out. “The Puppy Episode” was a huge ratings hit, despite protests from advertisers and religious groups. “Ellen” was renewed for another season, but the network insisted on preceding each episode with a parental advisory warning, and did not return for a sixth season.
