Christopher Abbott is set to face off against Aaron Taylor-Johnson in Sony’s “Kraven the Hunter.”

The actor will reportedly play The Foreigner, the film’s main villain, who is historically one of Spider-Man’s bigger adversaries from the comics. The character is a mercenary and assassin, albeit with no superhuman abilities, yet he is among Marvel’s greatest martial artists.

The latest in Sony Pictures’ universe of Marvel characters, which includes the “Spider-Man,” “Venom” and “Morbius” films, “Kraven the Hunter” is set to be released theatrically Jan. 13, 2023. Taylor-Johnson stars as Kraven, who is among Marvel’s most iconic antiheroes and another of Spider-Man’s most formidable enemies. The star-studded ensemble also includes Russell Crowe, Ariana DeBose, Fred Hechinger and Alessandro Nivola.

DeBose suits up as Calypso, a voodoo priestess who is the on-and-off lover of Kraven. The character first appeared in “Spider-Man” comics in the early 1980s as an adversary of Marvel’s teen web-slinger with the power of mind control. Details are murky about who Nivola and Crowe would play, with both joining the pic in unspecified roles

“Kraven the Hunter” is directed by J.C. Chandor with Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach producing. Art Marcum, Matt Holloway and Richard Wenk wrote the screenplay.

Abbott is repped by WME and Management 360.

Deadline was first to report news of Abbott’s casting. Sony had no comment.
