Juan Ponce, SVP of production operations and strategy for Telemundo Global Studios, has been promoted to SVP and general manager of the recently launched original scripted content venture Telemundo Streaming Studios, which seeks to fulfill the growing needs of Latino audiences on direct-to-consumer platforms. The initiative, which only just had its ribbon-cutting earlier this May, is the first-ever studio of its kind exclusively dedicated to Hispanic SVOD media in the U.S. and around the world.

“Juan is a seasoned executive with the perfect experience and track record to lead this new studio and help Telemundo Global Studios continue to pioneer this highly competitive industry,” said Marcos Santana, president of Telemundo Global Studios. “His business acumen and creative expertise will be instrumental in helping us launch Telemundo Streaming Studios to fulfill the growing demand for streaming content among Latinos in the U.S. and across international markets.” In his new role, Ponce will continue to report to Santana and will be responsible for leading Telemundo Streaming Studios as well as continue to oversee production operations, production design and Telemundo’s Underground Producciones in Argentina.

Ponce’s first role at NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises in 2016 was VP of finance and corporate strategy. Prior to Telemundo, he was CEO and founder of Hispanic startup New Generation Media, which focused on content production and distribution. The Kellogg School of Management MBA recipient also spent nearly 15 years in the financial services industry and is a seasoned equities and venture capital investor, counseling multiple startups in diverse industries. He will work closely with Karen Barroeta, EVP of production and development at Telemundo Global Studios, and Santana to identify synergies and joint production opportunities for the studios.

Based out of Miami, Telemundo Streaming Studios kicked off with more than 35 projects in development, including the dramedy “Armas de Mujer” for Peacock, the fourth and fifth season of the Nicolás Furtado headliner “El Marginal” for Netflix, as well as several other new series and remakes slated for release in the 2021-2022 season (all of which can be read more about here). In addition to developing and producing its own IP, the new studio will offer production services to streaming platforms in search of high-quality production expertise and capabilities.
