Peacock has ordered the series “The Resort” from writer Andy Siara with Sam Esmail set to executive produce.
Titled “The Resort,” the eight-episode series is described as a darkly comic multi-generational exploration of love, marriage, and family vacations, set amidst one of the Mayan Riviera’s most bizarre unsolved mysteries.
“Andy and Esmail Corp have a distinct point of view exploring off-kilter, genre-bending storytelling that is infused with humanity and compelling characters,” said Lisa Katz, president of scripted content for NBC Universal Television and Streaming. “’The Resort’ has everything viewers are looking for in their next escape drama – thrill, mystery, love and a tropical backdrop.”
Siara will write and executive produce “The Resort” along with Allison Miller. The pair are currently working on the Peacock series “Angelyne,” on which Miller is the showrunner and Siara is a co-producer. Esmail and Chad Hamilton of Esmail Corp (via Anonymous Content) will also executive produce under Esmail Corp’s overall deal with studio UCP. Sarah Matte of Esmail Corp serves as co-executive producer.
“’The Resort’ is a dream-come-true collaboration between Andy and Esmail Corp, two creative forces who from ‘Palm Springs’ to ‘Mr. Robot’ have continued to reinvent and subvert genre with heart. By combining an unsolved crime investigation with an exploration of marriage in a tropical location, they have designed a show for the Peacock audience that is fresh, fun and relatable,” said Beatrice Springborn, president of UCP.
Siara is known for writing the screenplay for the film “Palm Springs” starring Andy Samberg and Cristin Milioti. The film debuted at Sundance last year and sold to Hulu/Neon in a deal valued at over $17 million. It debuted on Hulu in July. Siara was also previously a staff writer on the AMC series “Lodge 49.”
He is repped by UTA, LBI Entertainment and Morris Yorn.
“The Resort” is the latest series order at Peacock in recent weeks. Last week, the streamer announced an order for the drama “Mrs. Davis” from Tara Hernandez and Damon Lindelof. Two weeks ago, Julie Plec landed a series order for an adaptation of “The Vampire Academy.”
