“See Us Unite for Change” is a multi-platform special event that hopes to accelerate impact and expand support for the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities. The special will air Friday at 8 p.m. across several channels, including MTV, Comedy Central, BET, Nickelodeon and Facebook Watch.
Ken Jeong, who will host the event alongside music stars Mike Shinoda and Jhene Aiko, told Variety that he is honored to headline the special event.
“I’m very honored to be hosting ‘See Us Unite,’ a special event showcasing the Asian American community with an evening of special performances and important messages that will inspire, inform and celebrate,” Jeong told Variety. “It’s time we all put an end to anti-Asian racism in this country and come together to show empathy and kindness.”
With the recent rise of anti-Asian hate crimes, Jeong said it’s important for his community to stand together and have their voices heard.
“It is important for us to have our voices heard and to be a collective as a community in the Asian American society to say, ‘enough is enough,'” Jeong said. “We have to take a stand against systemic racism, loudly and proudly.”
The event will also celebrate the deep and rich history of Asian American culture. Other celebrities participating in the special are Henry Golding, Olivia Munn, the Black Eyed Peas, Chloe Flower, “Minari” stars Steven Yeun and Alan Kim, Jeremy Lin and Michelle Kwan. Golding said the goal of the event is exactly what is seen in the title.
“We’re uniting for change,” Golding said. “We need to ensure that this doesn’t progress beyond this year.”
Golding said it was important for him to be a part of this event because he wants to build a future for his daughter.
“She’s going to be growing up in America and I don’t want this to be hanging over her head, being different in a circled society that’s meant to protect each other,” Golding said.
Presented by the Asian American Foundation, event sponsors include the Ford Foundation, MacArthur Foundation, The Henry Luce Foundation and the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation.
