With most people staying home last year, content creation on social media app TikTok continued to see a boom in users and videos.
The social site shared 2020’s top 100 lists for creators, hashtag trends and viral videos to surface on the app over the year. Many of the year’s top creators gained millions of followers in 2020, and viral trends resulted in the creation of hundreds of thousands of new videos for users to engage with.
Topping the creators list is Charli D’Amelio. The 16-year-old star who surpassed the 100 million follower mark in the latter months of 2020. She’s known for viral dance videos and other creative content. She also has the largest following on the platform overall. She is followed by number two and three creators Tabitha Brown and Bella Poarch.
Poarch is also the creator honored with the top position in 2020’s viral videos category. In a lip-syncing video of Millie B’s “M to the B,” the user added a filter that allows her camera to track her face. The video blew up, garnering over 45 million likes and spread across other social platforms. Nathan Apodaca, better known by his TikTok username 420doggface208, came in at No. 2 with a video of himself skateboarding and drinking cranberry juice to the song “Dreams” by Fleetwood Mac. Rounding out the top three is a video by Caitlin Reilly in which she takes on the persona of an annoying coworker during a Zoom meeting.
The viral trends, hashtags and challenges section is topped by the #YouHaveTo trend. Videos categorized under this topic include users’ voiceovers layered on harpist Hannah Stater’s cover of “A Moment Apart.” The voiceovers explain some topic that other users “have to” stop doing, like commenting “daddy” on Dr. Phil’s posts. Other top viral trends included a dance to The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights” and a series of posts under the hashtag #TwoPrettyBestFriends. The latter is a trend that kicked off after one user shared a video claiming he had never seen two pretty best friends.
