Australian streaming service Stan has acquired Australian rights to filmmaker David O’Donnell’s indie drama “Under My Skin,” with plans to debut the film on Aug. 21.

“Under My Skin” marks the feature debut of the Australian writer-director and follows Denny, a free-spirited artist who falls for Ryan, a straitlaced lawyer. When Denny questions gender, their love is tested.

“Stan has been a home for some great indies of late, so it seemed like an obvious fit for ‘Under My Skin,'” O’Donnell said of the new partnership with Australia’s second largest streaming service.

“It’s been a strange time to be releasing a film,” the filmmaker added. “But after screening at festivals this year, we’re looking forward to giving a wider audience the chance to see it. We’re hopeful it will resonate and continue to challenge audiences.”

The movie kicked off its festival run in 2020 at London’s Raindance Film Festival, where lead actor Liv Hewson was nominated for best performance for their role.

In a major moment for representation, Denny is played in the film by four different actors who identify as non-binary, or trans non-binary: Hewson (“Santa Clarita Diet,” “Bombshell”), Bobbi Salvör Menuez (“Euphoria,” “Transparent”) and newcomers Lex Ryan and Chloe Freeman.

Alex Russell (“Chronicle,” “SWAT”) and Alexis Denisof (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “The Avengers”) also star in the movie, which is produced by Raynen O’Keefe and Russell.

Ahead of the film’s festival debut, Raynen — who identifies as trans and non-binary — explained why having the four actors play the lead role “feels very intuitive.”

“At this point in history, the casting of trans, gender-diverse and non-binary characters with people of lived experience is not only a social responsibility of film-making, but is also a moral imperative in the task of uplifting trans and gender-diverse stories, voices, and representation,” Raynen said.

“Under My Skin” will debut in other territories later this year.

Hewson and Russell are repped by UTA and Mosaic, with Hewson additionally represented by Narrative and Aran Michael Management in Australia and Russell also repped by United Management in Australia.

Menuez is repped by Innovative and Silver Lining Entertainment, while Denisof is represented by APA and Mosaic. Ryan is repped by Authentic and Freeman by Stefanie Talent.
