Filmmaker Carlos López Estrada has signed with M88, the full-service representation firm founded by former WME partner Phillip Sun and MACRO’s Charles D. King.
López Estrada is best known for directing Disney’s animated film “Raya and the Last Dragon,” released in March, starring Kelly Marie Tran and Awkwafina, as well as the 2018’s Sundance hit “Blindspotting,” with Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal.
After the breakthrough success of “Blindspotting,” which marked the filmmaker’s feature directorial debut, López Estrada was named one of Variety’s 10 Directors to Watch for 2018 and was also nominated for a Directors Guild award.
López Estrada’s second feature, “Summertime,” premiered on opening night of Sundance 2020 and is set to be released in July by Good Deed Entertainment. The film, a slam poetry musical, was developed by 25 young poets who all also acted as co-writers for the film. López Estrada re-teamed with his “Raya” star Tran for the project, who serves as an executive producer.
López Estrada is currently in production on an original animated feature at Walt Disney Animation, set to release in 2023. Last year, it was announced that he was attached to direct a live-action adaptation of “Robin Hood” for Disney plus.
On the television side, López Estrada also directed an episode of FX’s “Legion.” The filmmaker began his career in music videos, directing some of music’s biggest names, including Billie Eilish, Katy Perry, Father John Misty, Thundercat with Flying Lotus, Carly Rae Jepsen, Clipping and Passion Pit. In 2012, he won a Latin Grammy for directing the animated music video for “Me Voy” by Mexican pop duo Jesse & Joy.
López Estrada is also represented by UTA and Ziffren Brittenham.
