Lena Waithe is riding into “Westworld.”

Variety has learned that Waithe has signed on for a role in the upcoming third season of the HBO drama series. The exact nature of Waithe’s role is being kept under wraps.

Waithe previously starred in and wrote for the Netflix series “Master of None.” She won the Emmy for best comedy writing for the episode “Thanksgiving,” with the episode based on Waithe’s own experience of coming out to herself and her family. She is currently the showrunner on the BET series adaptation of “Boomerang.” The second season of her Showtime series “The Chi,” which Waithe created and executive produces, premiered earlier this month.

Waithe’s other acting credits include the film “Ready Player One” as well as the shows “This Is Us,” “Transparent,” and “Dear White People.”

She is repped by WME, The Mission Entertainment, and Del, Shaw, Moonves.

Waithe joins previously announced “Westworld” Season 3 cast member Aaron Paul. Production recently began on Season 3 and the show is not expected to air again until at least 2020.

The series, based on the Michael Crichton film of the same name, was created for television and executive produced by Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. J.J. Abrams and Ben Stephenson of Bad Robot Productions also executive produce along with Richard J. Lewis and Athena Wickham. Nolan and Joy’s Kilter Films and Bad Robot produce in association with Warner Bros. Television.

It was recently announced that Nolan and Joy would exit their overall deal with WBTV for a deal at Amazon said to be worth nine figures. Under the new deal, Nolan and Joy will remain as writers and executive producers on “Westworld.”

I know Westworld has a big fan base, but I’m really not impressed by the series, especially after the second season. I’ll sample the third season, since I have a HBO subscription, but unless it offers some plots and acting. That draw me in, I doubt it will be a show that I’ll continue to watch.

    Brilliant!

  3. The Truth says:

3rd season is now guaranteed to suck even worse than the 2nd season

  4. Adam says:

How many people are still going to care by the time season 3 airs sometime next year? Season 2 experienced a significant drop in the ratings. The length of time between seasons for this show is ridiculously long.

@The Truth. Yep, I agree. See my comments, which were the first here. One way production companies try to grab more eyeballs, is to throw in the “current darling of the masses”.

  6. Lawrence Moran says:

@Adam. I assume the CGI production that has to be done in the series, requires a lot time. However, I agree with you, the amount of time between seasons, is annoying. Though I don’t think the third season is going to be very good, after the “meh” second season. Speaking of long stretches between seasons. Look how long it took for HBO to release the final season of Game of Thrones.😲 Talk about annoying.😒

Why season 3? everybody already forgot about this show. Imagine getting laid with a girl, she tells you she wants to be your girlfriend and then she will travel and be back in 5 years for just a week… Westworld style.

Everyone acting like Lena is a hero needs to rethink it. Why was “the chi” last to fire jason Mitchell? She says she didn’t know. Yet at least two reports were filed. She has no accountability as the creator of the show. The buck should stop with her. She claims to be a champion of progressive values yet failed her cast and crew and allowed Mitchell’s behavior to continue. Thank god for Netflix for standing up to him.
