Sky Italia Appoints Nicola Maccanico as Content Chief

Prominent Italian exec Nicola Maccanico, who is a former managing director of Warner Bros. in Italy, has been appointed chief of programming at Sky Italia.

The appointment of Maccanico follows the recent exit of Andrea Scrosati who held that position at the Italian unit of pan-European pay TV giant Sky and starting in November will become COO of Fremantle Media in London.

Maccanico early in his career joined Sky Italia as its European affairs manager, then went to Warner Bros. which he left in 2016 to head the innovative Sky Italia-led Vision Distribution theatrical distribution unit, a brainchild of Scrosati, which has become the country’s second-largest local theatrical distributor in less than two years.

Maccanico will take on the new role of Sky Italia Executive VP Programming, becoming the top content executive in Italy for Sky, which is now controlled by U.S. cable giant Comcast.

He will be in charge of all content at the broadcaster except for sports and news. Sky Italia originals productions head Nils Hartmann, Sky Cinema chief Margherita Amedei, and business and acquisitions manager Luisa Borella will now all report to him, as will Antonella d’Errico who on Monday was appointed Vice President of Sky Branded channels. D’Errico has been driving audience share growth at TV8 and Cielo, the two Italian terrestrial channels owned and operated by the paybox.

For the moment Maccanico will also continue to serve as CEO of Vision Distribution which he and Scrosati set up in 2016 as a joint-venture between Sky Italia and five independent Italian production companies. As previously announced, Scrosati will continue to remain Vision Distribution chair.

Scrosati during his roughly ten-year tenure was instrumental in Sky Italia’s commissioning of some of Europe’s hottest TV series, including “Gomorrah” and Paolo Sorrentino-directed “The Young Pope.”

Maccanico, who combines a deep knowledge of the Italian and international markets, is expected to follow in Scrosati’s footsteps in terms of commissioning edgy high-end Italian shows with global potential, though the volume and scope of Sky Italia’s original productions’ output going forward remains to be seen.

Despite Italy’s economic crisis, Sky Italia’s subscriber base is growing, with its non-sports content considered an important driver. In 2018, the company struck deals with Netflix and Mediaset, integrating their content with Sky’s offer.

Hot Sky Italia skeins in the pipeline include Stefano Sollima-directed global cocaine crimer “ZeroZeroZero” and financial thriller “Devils,” toplining Patrick Dempsey and Italy’s Alessandro Borghi, on which veteran British television and film director Nick Hurran (“Sherlock”) is serving as showrunner.
