The “Gears of War” franchise is branching out from its third-person cover shooter roots. Microsoft unveiled “Gears Tactics,” a turn-based strategy title, during its E3 press conference on Sunday.
“Gears Tactics” promises to evolve turn-based tactics games by combining fast-paced brutal action and character-driven storytelling with customizable squads, upgradable weapons, and massive boss battles. It’s also the first “Gears” game to be specifically designed for PC gamers. It takes place 12 years before “Gears of War 1” and tasks players with hunting down a Locust Horde responsible for destroying whole cities.
“Thirteen years ago when I began my ‘Gears of War’ journey, we had no idea how big this franchise would become,” The Coalition studio head Rod Fergusson said on-stage during the press conference. “And as it’s grown, we’ve dreamed of taking it to new places in different ways to reach even more fans.”
Fergusson said his team will share more details about the game soon.
