The “Modern Family” cast has endured for almost 10 seasons, but the end is near for one character.

Co-creator Christopher Lloyd told Entertainment Weekly that a “significant” character will die in the upcoming 10th season of the family comedy, which is set to premiere Sept. 26 on ABC.

“We’re handling some bigger life events in this season,” he told the magazine. “We do deal with a death, which is certainly a topic that families have to deal with, and on television, it’s not easy to do because that’s a heavy subject. But at the same time, it would seem unusual for a family not to go through it.”

Lloyd would not reveal who the character is, but he did say that the death would impact several episodes. The 10th season also marks the end of the show’s multi-season contract, so future seasons remain uncertain. Co-creator Steven Levitan has previously talked about ending the show, but Lloyd expressed a different sentiment.

“There’s goodwill on both sides to make it happen, but there’s also complicated matters that have to get worked through, and there’s a time constraint on it, because we can’t have it take too long,” he said. “I’m hoping that that doesn’t make the whole thing go away, but I think there’s a decent chance we’ll see it happen.”

I’m guessing we’re supposed to be worried about Jay (Ed O’Neill’s character), but perhaps it really is Phil Dunphy’s father (played by Fred Willard).

“Major” character. DeDe and Phil’s father are NOT major characters.

This is the sole reason we have TV, to watch MModern Family. Who says these shows/ family mmembers must END? Those are the old rules, these are new times.

It does NOT say “Major”. It says “Significant”. Both are significant recurring characters.

Note they say “major character” not “major cast member”. It’s obviously Dee Dee who probably hasn’t appeared in ten episodes but has been mentioned in maybe a hundred. They are not going to kill someone who it will take a long time for the show to move pass. This is basically repeating and revising the Blackish stunt of killing off the wife’s father (a infrequent guest star) but pull together the “marriage on the rocks” storyline and put it in the past. Just a tacky publicity stunt for an aging series. And if it is Dee Dee it will ruin the reruns as she is constantly bad-mouthed and tons of jokes at her expense, this will give the reruns a really toxic edge.

No, not Stella! This death will impact several episodes so I would think it would be someone that all the characters have an intimate relationship with, eliminating Mannys father and Phil’s father from being contenders. I’m gonna say Dylan will die in a very Dylanesque manner (kinda like the comic relief that Charlie Harper’s death on 1/2 men provided). Can’t wait to see regardless. And I so hope the show isn’t gonna call it quits. Not quite ready to let it go!

I have a feeling it is Phil’s dad. I thought in one of the later episodes last season, he spoke about moving from Florida to California, which would have likely increased his appearances. Maybe he moves, but later passes away after a couple of episodes.

what if its Claire?!? now that would be some heavy s*&% and some really great television!! But its a sitcom so I doubt they will take the story line that deep.
