The network purchased a script for the Universal Television-produced project, which tells the story of a young, hip music label, along with its young, hip boss, is thrown into disarray when the owner brings back a hard-partying, middle-aged “mastodon” from the industry’s past to help guide them into the future.
“A&R” is the first scripted sale of the season for Cowell’s production company Syco. The show is being written by Josh Lieb, who is exec producing alongside Cowell with Scott Bernstein and Peter Samson.
Cowell has a deep relationship with NBC on the unscripted front, rooted in hit reality competition “America’s Got Talent,” on which Cowell serves as a judge and producer. Represented by WME and Ziffren Brittenham, Cowell last year signed a three-season deal to stay with “America’s Got Talent.” The 12th season of the series, which has reigned in recent years as broadcast’s highest rated summer entertainment program, ended with a Sept. 20 finale, with Cowell appearing alongside fellow judges Mel B, Heidi Klum, Howie Mandel and host Tyra Banks. The most recent season was the second for Cowell as a judge on the show.
